George "Bill" Randolph Moulder Jr.

George “Bill” Randolph Moulder, Jr., 85, passed away in his home in West Lafayette, Indiana, surrounded by family, on March 11, 2019. He was born December 2, 1933, in Jackson, Mississippi, to George “Billy” Randolph Moulder, Sr., and Edna Earl Corley (Knight).

Bill grew up in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. His first job was with the Illinois Central Railroad as a beginner telegraph operator where he learned Morse code. In 1952, he joined the Navy and became a radioman. He was aboard the USS Noble during the Korean War. In 1955, he was stationed at Naval Air Facility Oppama where he met the love of his life, Nobuko Teraoka. Government bureaucracy tried to discourage their romance but they persevered and were allowed to marry on November 26, 1957. The newlyweds moved to San Diego and welcomed their son, David Hugh Moulder to the family in 1959. In 1961, they moved to US Naval Communications Station Philippines until 1965 when Bill was assigned to the USS John R. Craig during the Vietnam War. In 1966, the family moved to Midway Island where his daughter, Vicki Marie (Satterly) was born. In 1968, the family moved to Key West, Florida, and in 1970, they moved to Iceland. In 1973, Bill was assigned to Naval Air Station, New Orleans. While there, the family enjoyed vacationing in Pensacola, Florida. In 1975, Bill was assigned to the USS Lexington, a training aircraft carrier at NAS Pensacola. Bill and Nobuko decided to retire in Pensacola in 1980 after serving 30 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as Senior Chief Petty Officer. After retiring from the Navy, Bill worked in civil service supervising staff at Saufley Field’s Technical Library. He retired in 1998 after serving 18 years. All in all, Bill spent 48 years of his life in government service.

Bill loved spending time with his family more than anything. He was warm and generous and made himself available to talk and listen. He always thought about others before himself. His love for his wife was inspiring and beautiful. He often said that he wasn’t in a hurry to go but he wasn’t afraid either because he wanted to be with Nobuko, who preceded him in death on June 26, 2017. His daughter convinced him to move in with her family in West Lafayette, Indiana, in August of 2018, a year after Nobuko’s death. Bill and Nobuko will be buried together at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola.

Bill’s children, David Hugh Moulder (Pamela Moulder) and Vicki Marie Satterly (John Satterly), and his grandchildren, Katherine Rose Moulder and Duncan Randolph Satterly, survive him.

There will be a visitation and memorial service for Bill at noon on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home (www.oaklawnfunerals.com) at 619 N. New Warrington Road in Pensacola. Following the memorial service, there will be a procession starting at 1:30 to Barrancas National Cemetery.
