He was born in Middletown, Ohio to Everett and Sarah Chasteen, who preceded him in death, as well as his son Todd Chasteen and his brother, Earl Chasteen.
Gary leaves behind his wife, Laura Chasteen, sons: Michael (Tiffany), David (Brandi), Mark (Christa), Cade and Laban (Beth) Chasteen; daughter Ashley (Jeremy) Koss; stepdaughter Melody (Chris) Vandivere, and stepson Josh (Elaine) Ponder; grandchildren: Brylee, Braelyn, Jace, Ronan, Graham, Harrison, Rebecca, Samantha, Kassidy, Gracie, Stella, Kaley, Reese, Braxton and Mary; sister Becky (Bob) Miller, brother Jim (Thoy) Chasteen and sister-in-law Brenda Chasteen.
He was a supervisor for UPS in Natchitoches, Louisiana (retired 2003) and then was a landlord and handyman until 2017.
Gary relished life and pursued adventure with abandon. The more challenging the venture, the more motivated he was to do it. Marathon motorcycle journeys, wilderness tent camping, backpacking across the Grand Canyon, ocean kayaking, and roofing his own house are just a few of his exploits. Gary was also an avid problem solver. From single handedly moving shingles onto a roof to solving family lineage mysteries through DNA, he used his ingenuity and spatial genius to achieve the seemingly impossible tasks. Action was his love language. Guided by his strong moral compass, he was always willing to come to the aid of those in need regardless of the inconvenience or effort it required. His wit, authenticity, fearlessness, and energy inspired and befriended people wherever he went. The world is a better place because he was in it.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you donate blood and/or platelets at any local blood bank or make a donation to the Traditional Music Ministry Intern Fund at First Baptist Church of Pensacola (fbcp.org).
