A resident of Yates County for all of his 98 years, Leon Kenyon died Sunday, June 15, 2014 at the Homestead Nursing Home, Penn Yan, NY. Born October 25, 1915 in Voak Township to Samuel and Henrietta Kenyon, Leon graduated Penn Yan Academy in 1933. During WWII, he served in the US Air Force in Roswell, NM and Bradley Field, CT servicing B-17 and B-24 aircraft. Leon was proud of his military service and was a decades long member of the American Legion. An enthusiastic sailor all of his life, Leon sailed star boats with the Keuka Yacht Club during the 30s and 40s. Returning from military service in February 1946, Leon went to work for Keuka Lumber Company (now Knapp & Schlappi) where he continued to work until 2009. Talented at woodworking and carpentry, Leon was a life-long “Mr. Fix It” and always an able advisor on projects large and small. He reveled in the lake life and used his life of nearly a century to be a great story teller of the local lore. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth Hansen Kenyon in 2001, and by his daughter, Sue, in 2006. He is survived by his daughter, Rae Glass and her husband, Ron, and by three grandsons, Mike Glass and his wife, Carrie; Steven Glass and his wife, Melissa; and Bob Glass; and by a great grandson, Kenyon Glass.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life for Leon at 11:00am on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Lake Keuka Baptist Church of Crosby, 736 E. Lake Rd., Penn Yan, NY 14527.
