Stephen Mathis, a loving and faithful son, husband, father, grandaddy and brother, was born on April 30, 1965 and went to be with Jesus on Sunday, April 7th, 2024. He was preceded in death by his father, Bennie L. Mathis, and his grandparents, Jesse & Anna Mathis, William Frank Jackson, and Ruth Monaghan.
He is survived by his beautiful and devoted wife Debbie Mathis (who he lovingly called “The Redhead” or “Red), his loving children, daughter Nicole Gutierrez (Javier), daughter Lindsey Watson (Daniel), and son Caleb Mathis (Kristin), his adoring grandchildren Maxwell Mathis, Juliet Mathis, Eloise Mathis, Kira Watson and Mila Watson, his mother Mary Mathis, his two sisters, Laurie Mullinax (Larry) and Beth Foley (John), along with a huge family of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends, all who loved him dearly. He affectionately nicknamed his daughters and granddaughters “Princesses” and numbered them 1-7, in birth order. His grandson Max was deemed “Grandbuddy."
After graduating from Pell City High School in 1983, Steve attended Nunnely State Technical College in computer programming, and later studied at Jefferson State Community College. In 2023 he retired from Honda working in New Model Parts Quality, and then was hired back as a consultant, traveling all over North America visiting Honda suppliers.
Steve came to know the Lord at a very young age and because sharing his faith was important to him, he served for many years in Children’s Church and Royal Rangers. He enjoyed sharing a legacy of Royal Ranger ministry with his father and later, his son and grandson. A devoted member of Life Church in Trussville, Alabama, Steve continued to serve in the Royal Rangers ministry until his passing.
He was an avid reader, lover of music, ardent hiker and mountain biker, and talented artist. His membership in the Frontiersman group of Royal Rangers (FCF) allowed him to merge his love of the Rangers program with his love of the outdoors.
Steve will be remembered as a friendly, loving, reflective man who was loved by so many. He had a deep and desperate love for his “Redhead” wife Debbie, and was so grateful for the life the Lord gave him. He was intentional in making special memories with his children and grandchildren. Most important to him, he wanted to make sure the people he loved knew God. His children learned to love the Lord through Steve’s example.
There will be a service celebrating Steve’s life on Thursday, April 11, at Victory Church, in Pell City, Alabama. The service will be at 11:00 am with a visitation at 10:00 am.
