Stanley graduated from Bessemer High School in 1954 and as a first-generation college student embarked on the path of higher education in 1961 at the University of Montevallo. In 1965, Stanley’s diligence and hard work led to a degree in Education from the University of Alabama. He went on to attain his Master’s in Education in 1974 from the University as well, navigating the challenges of working full-time and being married with children.
In addition to his academic accomplishments, Stanley embarked on a diverse and impactful career. He served as a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy before becoming a history teacher at Berry High School. While working there he began to focus on vocational education and ultimately became the Director of Vocational Education for the Jefferson County school system, a position he held until 1990. Subsequently, he became the Dean of Career Technical Education at Lawson State Community College. Until his retirement in 1995, his dedication to vocational education over the years, allowed him to influence the lives of many teachers and students throughout Birmingham and Jefferson County.
Upon his retirement, Stanley embraced his joy for adventure. Twice a year, Stanley enjoyed trips to Panama City. He crisscrossed the United States multiple times, visiting friends and family as he explored the country and its history. He was famous for taking each of his grandchildren on a birthday trip of their choice when they turned ten. He also traveled to other countries where he immersed himself in new experiences. During his travels, he never met a stranger, making connections and friends wherever he went.
Throughout his life, Stanley found guidance and strength in his faith. His Bible was a constant source of wisdom, and he studied it diligently in order to enrich his understanding of the world and to shape his compassion for it.
Stanley is survived by his devoted wife, Betty, whose unwavering support and companionship enriched every facet of his life. His legacy lives on through his loving children, Melody, John, and Wendy. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, whose lives he touched. His love for laughter and connection was evident in his penchant for sharing jokes, telling stories, and creating memories that will forever resonate in their hearts.
As we bid farewell, we remember a life dedicated to learning, teaching, and exploring. We celebrate his life journey and remember a father, grandfather, and husband who will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts.
