Charles graduated in 1967 from the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He worked in the banking industry in the Birmingham area for 40 years. He was a life member of the Birmingham Area Chamber of Commerce.
Since 1978, Charles served as a volunteer firefighter with the North Shelby County Fire District. He became a member of the Board of Directors in 1990 and served as board president from 2010 to the present.
In addition to serving as president of Chace Lake Country Club in 1981, he was a lifelong member of the Suttle 6 Hunting Club, and the Courtyard 280 Gang and Honors Club.
Charles was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Rogers Waldrop, and his father, Robert Greenberry Waldrop. Survivors include his wife, Danna L. Waldrop; daughters, Brooke Waldrop Guercio (CJ) and Paige Waldrop Burgess (Will); grandchildren, Idelle, William and Frances Burgess, and Alexandria, Gabriella and Sophia Guercio; sister-in-law, Lynn Barbee; and brother-in-law, Frank Barbee.
Visitation will be on Monday, October 29, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Christ Church United Methodist Church, 5091Caldwell Mill Road, Birmingham, AL 35242. A celebration of Charles’ life will start at 11 a.m. on Monday at Christ Church UMC, with Pastor Paul Lawler of Christ Church United Methodist and Reverend Donny Acton of New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church officiating. Graveside service will follow at Southern Heritage Cemetery on Highway 119 in Pelham, AL.
Charles will be honored with a Firefighters Funeral because of his many years of service to the North Shelby County Fire District. His one request was that we all be in casual attire.
Charles' grandchildren were very important to him and they loved him dearly. So in lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Oak Mountain Elementary School, 5640 Cahaba Valley Road, Birmingham, AL 35242. The school is setting up a reading nook in the library that will be dedicated to Charles.
