Michael was a 2020 graduate of Hoover High School where he was an honors student, member of the cross country and track teams, and a senior class officer. He was an Eagle Scout from Troop 21 and a member of both Young Life and the Shades Crest Baptist Youth Group. He had received an academic scholarship from Auburn University where he planned to study engineering.
Michael enjoyed listening to music, playing his guitar, being outdoors, playing ultimate frisbee, and spending time with his friends. He is remembered by teachers and friends for how easily he could take over a room — not just because of his 6’ 6” height — but because of his huge heart and easy smile. Those who knew him best have plenty of stories of his mischievous antics but also his natural ability to deflect any tension and make everyone laugh. He was well loved by peers and adults alike and known for making time to talk to people and get to know them. One person summed him up best as “truly sunlight with a heart of gold.”
Michael is survived by his parents, David and Jennifer, and his brother, Matthew, all of Hoover. He is also survived by his grandparents, Lawrence and Lillian Corley of Mountain Brook, Alabama, and Gardner McCollum of Alabaster, Alabama; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be held at Shades Crest Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2020, with a memorial service to follow at 7 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the Children’s Fresh Air Farm (CFAF gifts) or the Boy Scouts of America.
