Martha Cobb Cobern left this world for her eternal home on February 7, 2020. Marti was born on August 15, 1931, to Henry Lee Cobb and Wincie Johnson Cobb in Birmingham, Alabama, the youngest of ten children.
She was a prayer warrior and caretaker, a loyal friend, and a longtime member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in many ministries. She was known for her tender heart, her thoughtfulness, and the small kindnesses she showed to any fortunate enough to make her acquaintance. Marti was the patriarch of a family of girls, and she delighted in them so. She left this world peacefully, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family and almost all of her girls, save for two: the newest one, her great-granddaughter Addison Owen McClure, who made her entrance into this world the day before her great-grandmother left it, and Addison’s mother, Meredith Mims McClure (Thomas), one of her three adoring granddaughters. She was also survived by two other granddaughters, Kyndall Waters and Kristin Waters Sullivan, and her cherished daughters, Kim Cobern Mims (Park) and Marla Kit Waters (Keith). She was preceded in death by her faithful husband and constant companion of fifty years, James Curtis Cobern, her parents, and her nine brothers and sisters: Pauline Cobb Dunbar, Lola Bell Cobb, Cora Cobb Kelley, Mildred Cobb Schneider, Henry Cobb, Charles Cobb, Virginia Cobb Robbins, and Lois Cobb Partain. Marti was also survived by countless friends and members of her church family, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, located at 1114 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209. The family will receive visitors after the service. In lieu of flowers, Marti and her family would be thrilled for gifts to be made in her memory to The Brother Bryan Mission in Birmingham, Alabama.
