Marceline Turner May (“Marcie”) of Birmingham, AL and formerly of Atlanta, GA, entered into her eternal rest on Saturday, April 29th as she was “relieved of her earthly miseries and delivered into the presence of the Savior” she had pointed many to all her life.
Marcie was born on August 16, 1931 in Atlanta and spent most of her early adult life in the area. In high school, she was a member of the Atlanta Civic Ballet and later attended the University of Georgia where she met her husband Earle. The two of them were married in 1953, enjoying 52 years of marriage. The highlight of her life was in 1972 when, at age 41, she came to faith in Jesus Christ, an event that would forever change her and many others.
Because of her commitment to Christ, Marcie (and Earle) was deeply in love with and drawn to the ministry of Young Life, particularly the ministry’s camp in North Georgia where they lived, Sharp Top Cove. They became the camp’s “unofficial grandparents” and deeply impacted many of the property staff there for a dozen years. In addition to fund-raising for the camp, she would often “plant (flowers) and pray” at the camp for middle and high school kids to meet Christ in a profound way. Because of her service there, the camp pool’s snack bar bears her name, an honor that was one of the highlights of her life.
In 2003, she moved to Birmingham with her husband Earle who preceded her in death two years later in 2005. For many years, she was an active member of her beloved Mountain Brook Community Church, met with and discipled many women, served as a Young Life committee member, loved her extended family in deep and meaningful ways, and wrote a memoir of her life - “Good Morning, Abba, What Are We Doing Today." She often spoke of Christ to others – supermarket workers, gas station attendants, waiting room receptionists – in a winsome, yet truthful way. She loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandsons and often had them to her home to help her various chores at an extravagant hourly pay rate!
Marcie is survived by her two children Cathy McMullian (Neal) of Panama City, Panama and Ben May (Sally) of Birmingham, two grandsons Benjamin May of Atlanta, GA and Andrew May (Brinkley) also of Atlanta, one brother-in-law Dr. Charles May (Mary) of Macon, GA and a step-brother Frank Turner (Atlanta, GA) and numerous friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lorenz Turner.
In lieu of flowers, Marcie requested any donations or gifts be made to Young Life Birmingham South, Sharp Top Cove or Mountain Brook Community Church.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, May 2nd at 12 pm followed by a service of celebration at 1 pm CT at Mountain Brook Community Church with burial after at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
