After graduating from Pensacola (Florida) High School, John Edward earned his Associate Degree at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham, Alabama. He served 24 years in the U.S. Air Force before working with the Veterans Administration Hospital for 16 years.
John Edward loved playing golf, cruising, cracking pecans, and eating fried oysters.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Syble Pearson Salter, to whom he was wed on July 31, 1954. Survivors include one daughter, Laural Myers (Don) of Wilsonville, Alabama; two sons, Alan Salter (Cassie) of Hoover and Mark Salter of Alpharetta, Georgia; grandchildren, Bryan Myers (Jennifer), Sonya Lehner (Alex), Lauren Salter, Whitney May (Kevin), John David Salter (Jordan), Ansley Hampton (Scott), Caleb Salter (Courtney), and Joshua Salter (Elizabeth); great-grandchildren, Owen, Lydia, Luke, Emma Kate, Porter, Audrey, Hallie Grace, Brayden, and Jack; and one brother, James Salter (Lee Ann).
The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. A Service of Remembrance for John Edward Salter will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 12, 2021 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Chapel, Pelham, followed by the 1:15 p.m. gravesite committal service at Alabama National Cemetery, Montevallo.
