John received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Troy University in 1961. John was united in holy matrimony with Martha Venable on August 27, 1961 in Eclectic, Alabama. Their union was blessed with one child.
He was CEO and co-founder of MortgageAmerica, Inc. from 1978 to 2012.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed going to his and Martha’s farm in Tallassee, Alabama. John enjoyed managing the 700-acre River Oaks property and hunting white-tailed deer and turkey. John treasured time with his grandchildren, Aiden and Grayson.
John was a member of Independent Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama and served on its Session and the IPC Foundation.
John’s mortgage career began in 1966 at Colonial Mortgage Company. After serving as Colonial’s Chief Operating Officer, he moved to Birmingham and joined Molton-Allen & Williams serving in various capacities, the last of which was Executive Vice President heading the Mortgage Banking Division. John organized MortgageAmerica, Inc. in 1978 as its CEO and continued in that role until 2012.
John served as the Mortgage Bankers Association of Alabama President in 1980-1981 and chaired the organization’s Convention in 1982.
John was awarded the Certified Mortgage Banker designation in 1982. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America from 1999-2003 and served as Chairman of the Residential Board of Governors in 2001-2002. John was Chairman of the Board of Directors for MERS in 2006. He was instrumental in the forming of the America’s Mortgage Cooperative in 2000, a consortium of mortgage banking companies located across the United States and served as its Chairman in 2001-2002.
Throughout his career John attributed his wife and partner Martha as having a primary role in his success. John and Martha have been involved in many philanthropic causes through the years and have touched many lives. John’s walk with the Lord and caring for his family were paramount in his life.
John B. Johnson was preceded in death by his brother Berry S. Johnson, Sr. and his sister Peggy Robinson.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 63 years and love of his life Martha V. Johnson, his son J. Bradford Johnson (Shannan) his grandsons Aiden Johnson and Grayson Johnson, his sister Mary Welden Custer (Ken), and his nieces and nephews, Tammy Story (Damon), Renee Brooks (Jimmy), Sheree McCall (Britt), Berry Johnson, Jr., and Richard E. Robinson (Crissy).
Memorial Service will begin at 2:00 PM on Monday, April 22 with visitation following. Services will be held at Independent Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, Alabama.
