Jo is survived by Johnny, her devoted husband of 70 years. Together they grew their family by adding 4 children: Vickie Atkinson (David), Allen Bjurman (Brenda), Robbin McKinney (Glen), and Heidi Callicott (Jeff). Jo was a dedicated mother who found fulfillment in raising her children. The most valuable thing she gave them was a home built on a firm foundation. God continued to bless Jo’s life by adding 9 grandchildren whom she dearly loved: Daniel Atkinson (Heather), April Cullom (James), Nicholas Atkinson (Meg), Allie Harris (Kyle), Molly Melcher (Brett), Adam McKinney (Anna), Jarred McKinney (Tala), Luke McKinney (Peyton), and Zachary Callicott. Jo’s heart was made full when a new generation was added to the family with 9 great-grandchildren: Miles, Gracie, Brady, Petra, Judah, Levi, Mabel, Silas, Libby, and baby on the way. She treasured the time she spent with them and delighted in being their Nanny.
Anyone that stepped foot in the den of their home would immediately notice one thing: the family wall. The wall is covered with family pictures which tell a history of a godly heritage, passed down through the generations. When the grandkids would talk about Facebook, Jo would say, “I may not have a ‘Face Page’, but this is my wall.” Through this wall, she was conveying that the most beautiful part of her home was the family - the people who have lived and loved in this special place and made special memories.
One of Jo’s greatest challenges was her 50 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. It was through this struggle that her character of perseverance and determination was revealed. She was so strong and never complained despite all she went through. She always thought that there were other people who faced greater difficulties than she did. Jo was an inspiration and a role model.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Aus and Flay Sanderson, and her brother, Jerry Hugh Sanderson (Sonny).
