Dr. Jill K. Meyer passed away on July 2, 2022. She was the daughter of Myron (Mike) and Ruth Meyer (both deceased). She was so very proud of her parents who were both veterans of WWII. Her father was a decorated B-25 bomber pilot stationed in Italy and her mother was a Naval Intelligence Officer. Both of her parents are interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Jill is survived by her husband Bob Kent and his sons Christopher and Connor and Connor’s fiancé Jamie Talecki, all from Birmingham, AL. She is also survived by her sister Patricia Meyer and her husband Steve Hubbard of Irmo, SC as well as her beloved pup, Benjamin.
Jill was born April 17, 1959, in Atlanta, GA and her family later relocated to Conyers, GA. She graduated from Rockdale County High School in 1977 and then attended Emory University graduating in 1981 with a B.S. Degree in Chemistry. She then was accepted to the University of Alabama School of Optometry where she received her Doctor of Optometry degree in 1985.
After receiving her O.D. degree she started in private practice and within a few years bought her own practice where she saw patients for over 35 years. She sold her practice in 2018 and continued seeing patients until June 2021 when she officially retired. She also owned a private practice in Cullman, AL that she sold in 2009.
Jill was passionate about animals, humane societies, and rescue organizations. Her pups were the love of her life and many friends had jokingly said they hoped to come back someday as her pet. It was not unusual for Jill to pick up a stray on the highway and foster until she could find it a home. The surviving pup she had (Benjamin) was picked up in the middle of Pelham Parkway and taken home where he became the third member of her family.
Jill was an avid golfer and a member of Greystone Country Club for 30 years, loved the beach, water slides, and traveling. She was constantly exploring the next place to go. She was passionate about Duke basketball!
A memorial and celebration of life service will be held at the Southern Heritage Funeral Home located at Highway 119 and I-65 on July 16, 2022, with visitation beginning at 3:00. There will be a brief service at the end of visitation followed by lite snacks.
In lieu of flowers, Jill’s favorite animal rescue organization was Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, 712 L.G. Griffin Road, Locust Grove, GA 30248. She was also a continuous supporter of both the Birmingham and Shelby County Humane Societies.
