Frank Calhoun Minter, age 93, of Homewood, Alabama passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. He was the son of the late Saffold Andrew Minter and Margaret Calhoun Minter of Savannah, Georgia. He was born in Morganton, N.C. and grew up in Savannah, Georgia. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1949. Frank was the first Eagle Scout from Troop 12 at The First Presbyterian Church in Savannah.
He graduated from the The Citadel in 1953 as the Regimental Adjutant and the 2nd Honor Graduate with a degree in Business Administration.
He began work at Southern Bell Telephone Company in 1953, served in the United States Air Force from 1954-1956 primarily in Weisbaden, Germany. He returned to Southern Bell and worked in nine different locations during his 34-year career, including two assignments to AT&T in New York for a total of eight years. On his second tour he was promoted to officer level as Corporate Controller. He took early retirement in 1987 as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of AT&T International.
After retirement he became an Accounting Professor at Samford University for another 10 years, serving as Accounting Chairman for some of that period. He was especially proud of the advancement of the Accounting program during those years. He also published an Accounting and Auditing handbook for several of those years.
While at Samford he was designated with “doctoral equivalency” based on his achievements in the business world.
He is survived by his wife and best friend of 63 years, Patricia Coy Minter; four children, Hampton Debele Minter (Sharon), Frank Calhoun Minter, Jr. (Angela), Patricia Leighanne Minter Davis (Richard) and Margaret Ann Minter Bowen (Odell). His ten grandchildren, who will serve as honorary pallbearers are: Andrew Brett Minter (Kyndle), Bryan Paul Minter (Lauren), Ramsey Elliott Minter, Daniel Conrad Minter (Kim), Logan Newman Davis, Andrew Reynolds Davis, Patricia Ann Davis, Richard Swaim Davis, Jr., Daria Skye Nicke and Rori Grace Nicke.
He is also survived by two great granddaughters, Adalyn and Harper; two great grandsons, Sebastian and Owen, and two step great granddaughters, Aleowyn and Sparrow.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Carole Frances Minter in 2021 (also by her Mother and his first wife, Carole Farr Minter in 1961.)
Following his retirement from AT&T, he continued his involvement in the accounting profession. In addition to his serving as a faculty member at Samford, he served the Institute of Management Accountants in several positions, ending with his service as National President. He later served as Vice President and Trustee of the Financial Accounting Foundation, the parent organization of the two accounting standard-setting boards (FASB and GASB). He was selected three times by Accounting Today as one of the top 100 accounting professionals in this country. He also served the profession as a charter member of the FASB Emerging Issues Task Force and later as a member of the Financial Accounting Advisory Council (FASAC).
He was a Certified Public Accountant and had an MBA from the University of Memphis. He was a member of Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church, the Financial Executives International, The Institute of Management Accountants, the AICPA, and Vestavia Country Club.
Visitation will be held at Thursday, October 10 at 2:00 p.m. at Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church, 3405 Brookwood Road, Birmingham, Alabama 35223, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 3:00 p.m. Reverend Madison Roberts, Pastor of MBPC, where Mr. Minter served as an Elder and former Clerk of Session, will conduct the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest memorials to either Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church Foundation, Professor Frank C. Minter Endowed Scholarship Fund or the Citadel Foundation.
