McKinney, Edward L., age 89 of Vestavia Hills, passed away on October 10, 2017. He was born on May 22, 1928 in Fairfield, Alabama. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Julia T. McKinney; sons, Bruce (Anita) of Decatur and David (Nancy) of Atlanta; daughter, Gayle Allgood (Robert) of Austin, Texas; brother, Kirk of Birmingham; sister, Marion Graves of St. Charles, MO; grandchildren, Andrea Carter (Jay), Amy Smith (Ches), Allison Grill (Pat), Ashley Williams (Ben), Neal Allgood (Jayme), and Shannon Ray (Collin); and 7 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard D. McKinney and Madel C. McKinney; and brothers, Frank, Forest, Douglas, Hiram, and Rev. Gordon McKinney; and granddaughter, Lisa McKinney.
Ed graduated from Hueytown High School and attended U.A.B. He retired from American Cast Iron Pipe Co. (ACIPCO) after 39 years of service as Asst. Secretary and Credit Manager. He was honored for professional and community service by the Alabama Association of Credit Executives, being named “Alabama Credit Executive of the Year” in 1989.
He was a member of Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church for over 50 years, serving as a Trustee and various other positions in the church. Ed devoted over 40 years to the Boy Scouts of America. He served as Scout Master, Asst Scout Master and Institutional Representative. He received the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to scouting.
The celebration of Ed’s life will be at 3 pm on Friday, October 13, 2017 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church, 3139 Cahaba Heights Road, Vestavia Hills, AL 35243.
