Dora Ellen "Dodie" Pitts Phillips Davis, age 95, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on July 26, 2023 from complications suffered after a fall. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on June 25, 1928, the daughter of the late Herald E. Pitts and Hazel Mae Barnett Pitts. She grew up in north Birmingham and was a 1945 graduate of Phillips High School. She attended the University of Montevallo, then called Alabama College, for two years.
In 1948, she married Hilary Hugo Phillips, who passed away in 1989. They lived in Dallas, Texas, and Metarie, Louisiana before moving back to the Birmingham area in 1969. In 1993, she married Charles Earl “Charlie” Davis of Vestavia, who passed away in 2016.
While in Metarie, she was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and after moving to Alabama, she was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church, where she sang in the Joyful Singers senior adult choir, and worked in the Food Bank and Clothes Closet. As an active member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary, she participated in fundraising events that provided gifts for the Angel Tree Christmas program. She was also a member of Lakeside Baptist Church and North Shelby Baptist Church where she was a member of Doug Rogers Sunday School class at the time of her death.
During her work career, she was employed as a kindergarten teacher at Memorial Baptist and Green Valley Baptist, and worked for Carlos Johnson Construction, Robert Dow Appraisals and DeShazo Crane, where she was employed until retirement. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed Auburn University athletic events and spending time on Lake Martin with her family.
She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Dean Poole Scarbrough (Lyn) of Jackson’s Gap, Alabama; one son, Hilary Kent Phillips (Leigh) of Helena, Alabama; one granddaughter, Hilary Phillips Hill (Stephen) of Homewood, Alabama; four grandsons, John Britton Phillips (Tyler) of Norfolk, Virginia, Christopher Lee Poole (Shannon) of Hoover, Alabama, Bradley Lyn Scarbrough of McCalla, Alabama, and Shannon Lane Scarbrough (Michelle) of Central Asia; two great-grandsons, John Richard Phillips and Phillips Lee Hill; four great-granddaughters, Alexandra Diane Poole, Hannah Lane Scarbrough, Elizabeth Noel Scarbrough, and Leah Raye Scarbrough; and numerous family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hilary Hugo Phillips; husband, Charles Earl “Charlie” Davis; and sister, Deanie Pitts Young.
Visitation will be at Ridout's Southern Heritage in Pelham, Alabama on Monday, July 31, 2023 from 10-11 a.m. with a memorial service at 11 a.m. Burial will be a private family interment following the service.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama or to the North Shelby Baptist Church Missions Involvement Committee.
