Daniel Cleveland Thompson, of Birmingham, went to be with his heavenly Father on February 12, 2015. He passed away at home with his loving wife, Jackie, of 64 years by his side. Dan lived a long successful life and touched many people. Dan was a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a 1st Lieutenant.
As a young man, he owned a swimming pool business, Hurst-Thompson Pools, before going to work at AMICO (Alabama Metal Industries) as National Sales Manager of the expanded metals division. Dan eventually went on to become a Manufacturer’s Agent representing many steel companies, including Structural Metals, Inc. of Seguin, TX. Dan retired from his steel manufacturer’s agency at age 55 to become Vice President of Sales at SMI Steel, Inc., Birmingham, AL. He was instrumental in the success and growth of SMI Steel Inc., now Commercial Metals Company, and retired as Senior Vice President in 1996.
Throughout his life, he and Jackie traveled throughout the United States and many parts of the world enjoying playing golf. They had a long, happy storybook marriage setting a Christian example for their children, grandchildren and friends. Next to God, family was always the most important priority in Dan’s life. Dan, Jackie, their children and grandchildren spent many happy hours together creating countless wonderful and lasting memories. He was always involved in the church and loved to sing alongside his wife as she played the piano. He was a devout Christian and loved The Lord.
Dan is preceded in death by his father and mother, Daniel Cleveland and Hassie Joanna Thompson, his sisters, Mary Elizabeth Roberts, Louise Riddle and his grandson, Brandon Keith Wood (Kellie). He is survived by his devoted wife, Jacqueline Weir Thompson, children Daniel Wayne Thompson (Laura), Valerie Thompson Middleton, Jeffrey Alan Thompson (Trish), grandchildren, Katie Middleton, Camille Thompson Clowney (Jon), Brent Daniel Thompson and great-grandson, Cameron Wood.
The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of Dan’s caregivers, Russell Lough, Barbara Ellis, and Cinda Tyes. They provided love and nurturing during Dan’s time of need.
Donations can be made to the Church or Charity of your choice in memory of Dan.
The Funeral service will be held on Tuesday the 17th at Southern Heritage Funeral Home at 2pm with the visitation starting one hour prior.
