Dave attended Tulane University on a football scholarship, and according to him, he was on the team one of the few times they beat LSU.
Dave's professional career was in telecommunications with AT&T, BellSouth, and Superior Essex. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and loved his church. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and the kindest of men with a sense of humor that put everyone at ease. He loved everyone he met and they loved him.
Dave served his country as a U.S. Marine. Closest to his heart was his Savior, Jesus Christ, his God, his family, his sweet dog Pocket, and his country. In his leisure, he enjoyed golf (went on the senior pro circuit), football, flying, baseball (both his own and especially his grandson's), Jack's biscuits, and Chick-fil-A chocolate milkshakes.
Dave is survived by his wife, the former Roberta Mae Miller, to whom he was married on December 19, 1964; one daughter, Michelle Whitley Clark, and her husband Corey Clark; one son, Scott David Whitley, and his wife Heather Jones; grandchildren, Austin Whitley, Amelia Jones, Ethan Jones, Ella Whitley (Doodle Bug), Liz Clark, and Zach Clark; one sister, Dianne Blaikie and her husband Dave Blaikie; one brother, Hal Whitley and his wife Erin Whitley; and sister-in-law, Bridget Dowdy.
Dave's family will greet friends at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 from 6-7 p.m., followed by A Service of Remembrance at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124.
