He was the last surviving charter member of the Bryan Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served the Lord as ruling Elder, clerk of the session, secretary and treasurer, the first president of the Christian Endeavor Society, choir member, and church historian. He was retired from the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority. He was the last surviving member of the committee that renamed county road 17 in Shelby County to Valleydale Road. In 1995 he won the Shelby County Senior Citizens Spelling Contest.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ethel Riddle Martin; his wife of 69 years, Mary Jo Mc Guire Martin; brothers, John, Ray and Ruel Martin; sisters, Dorothy Martin, Lucille Martin Bailey, Faye Martin Smith Grey, Bobbie Martin Parks Shifflett, and Carolyn Martin Smith.
Survivors include son, Calvin Martin Jr., wife Sandra; son, Samuel J Martin and wife Pam; sister, Eva Mae Nix, husband Jimmie; brother, Jack Martin, and wife Marie; grandchildren, David Martin, wife Gina; Jeremy Martin, wife Angel; Dion Martin Lacey Viner, husband Heath; and 10 great grandchildren.
Calvin was always active in the Lord's mission work and supported his grandson Jeremy and wife Angel’s mission work in Africa, Belize, and now London.
