Ben was born June 15, 1938, in Wetumpka, Alabama. At a young age, Ben became a devoted Christian and remained devoted to his faith throughout his life. All who knew Ben can attest that he always put God first in his life and for his family. He was a member of Hunter Street Baptist Church and enjoyed both his small group as well as his weekly men’s bible study friends.
Ben graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1960. Upon graduation, he served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers including a deployment in Germany. Upon his return, Ben became a consulting Engineer working with several large engineering firms while earning a Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering from UAB -- all while employed full time and with four children. In 1974 Ben and Nancy formed Carr & Associates Engineers that operated for almost 50 years. Carr and Associates were well recognized and received numerous State and National Awards for their work.
Ben always made his wife and family a top priority. He loved his wife completely and always shared stories of their first date and how enamored he was the first time he saw her. Each of his children and grandchildren always felt his love and were confident that they were his favorite. He was able to make each of them feel that way as he shared a special and genuine relationship with each of them. The family cherishes many fond memories of sailing, golfing, traveling, and spending time together, especially for Auburn game days. Ben’s devotion to Auburn fan is evident in that not only were he and his wife both Auburn Alumni, but all four of his children and several grandchildren are Auburn Alumni or Auburn Bound. Ben valued education and provided an Annual Endowed scholarship through the Engineering School at Auburn. He cherished every moment, every accomplishment, and every friendship. Ben will truly be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
The family will receive visitors at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover on May 21 from 10:00 – 11:00. Services will follow at 11:00, officiated by Dr. Buddy Gray. Burial will be held at Southern Heritage funeral home at 1:00. Ben’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers with his Wednesday men’s Bible Study group acting as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to Big Oak Ranch, 250 Jake Mintz Road, Gadsden, Alabama 35905.
