Born October 27, 1935 in Peoria to Howard and Bessie (Tomlinson) Zimmerman, he married the love of his life, Patricia “Pat” A. Bartholomew. She died September 18, 2024 in Lincoln. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Clayton Alan Zimmerman; one grandson, Jace Walters; one great-grandson, Michael Zimmerman; three brothers, Kenneth, Robert and Donald and three sisters, Lorene, Evelyn and Shirley.
Surviving are two daughters, Kelley (Mark) Walters and Kathleen (Aaron) Sundell, both of Delavan; two sons, Timothy (Deb) Zimmerman of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Kevin (Rhonda) Zimmerman of Delavan; 14 grandchildren; two step-grandsons and 12 great-grandchildren, who thought the world of their “poppy”.
Virgil served as a medic in the United States Army.
He had worked at Corn Products in Pekin as an electrician for 28 years before retiring in 1982. Following retirement he was the property manager for TCRC for eight years and helped his son, Kevin with his construction company.
Virgil was a great woodworker and had made many treasures for his family. He loved to camp, fish and use to love to float the Mackinaw and Current River with all his children’s friends, who were considered his adopted kids. Virgil also had a great sense of humor that will be deeply missed.
A gathering celebrating both Virgil and Pat’s life will be at a later date. Cremation has been accorded by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
