Born April 15, 1934 in Macomb to George L. and Mary Isabelle (Watson) Kelso, he married Marilyn W. Warren on August 12, 1956 in Macomb. She died April 2, 2019 in Pekin. He also was preceded in death by his parents and one infant daughter, Karolyn Sue Kelso.
Surviving are two daughters, Kimberly K. Kelso of Peoria and Lisa (Tom) Walker of Tremont; two grandchildren, Eric Thomas (Susan) Walker of Lombard and Jennifer (Joseph Smith) Walker of St. Charles, Missouri; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Walker and Madeline Walker and two brothers, Roger W. Kelso of Macomb and Robert (Sue) Watson of Bloomington.
He was a graduate of Western Illinois University in Macomb, with both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree.
Dick was a longtime teacher with Illini Bluffs School District 327 in Glasford, where he was a teacher, coach, assistant principal and athletic director. He retired in 1990 with 34 years of service to the district. He and Dick Durchholz founded Illini Bluffs Track & Field and on September 22, 2014 the Dick Kelso Athletic Complex was dedicated in his name.
Dick was an avid golfer and was a fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. He also enjoyed following basketball.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor Eric N. Swanson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before the funeral at the funeral home. Burial will be at Prairie Haven Cemetery in Pekin.
