Mauritta was born on May 21, 1937, in Sparland to Stephen and Evelyn (O’Brien) Streitmatter. She married William M. Berlett on January 11, 1958 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Peoria. Bill passed away on August 17, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Delbert, Marilyn, Paul, and Doreen. Passing on to the Kingdom of Heaven also was her daughter, Catherine and her great-grandsons, William and Austin.
Surviving to rejoice, celebrate and share Mauritta’s memory are her daughters, Dianne Hunter of Hernando, Florida, Mary (Earl R.) Mauerman of Morton and Teresa (Hal) Burdin of Marquette Heights and her sons, Bradley (Angela) Berlett of Washington and William (Joan) Berlett, Jr. of Hoffman Estates. Mauritta is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and extended family.
Mauritta graduated from Sparland High School in 1955. She worked at Central Illinois Light Company from 1955 to 1958. After years of raising her six children, she reentered the workforce at Sears Credit Central from 1972 to 1992. She then became the ever-popular Librarian at the Marquette-North Pekin School District 102 from 1995 until her retirement in 2005.
She was a longtime member of the Altar & Rosary Society of Sacre Coeur Catholic Church; the Homemakers at Lexington Park in Peoria; the Stroke Chimers Group and was extremely proud to be a member and past president of Altrusa International in Pekin.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin and a former member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Peoria and Sacre Coeur Catholic Church in Creve Coeur, where she was a longtime member of the choir.
Her funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 21, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. Father Michael Andrejek will be the celebrant. The recitation of the Rosary will be held at 9:45 a.m. Saturday followed by a visitation from 10 to 10:45 a.m., both at the church. Burial will follow the Mass in Resurrection Cemetery in Peoria. Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
