Born September 9, 1953 in Effingham, she was the daughter of Darrell Eugene and Eva Norma Jean (Kuhlman) Van Meter. Her parents preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by one son, Michael David Van Metre and a sister-in-law, Linda Van Meter.
Surviving are one daughter, Angela Nicole Thorpe; one son, Timothy Ryan Matlock; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nine siblings, Linda (John) Pierson, Carol (John) Rowland, Danny (Carla) Van Meter, Dennis Van Meter, Larry (Janet Rhoades) Van Meter, Patricia (Bruce) Miller, Charles Van Meter and George (Mary Lou) Van Meter.
Leona graduated from Lake Land Community College in Mattoon in 1972 and then continued her education at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. She loved learning and studied journalism, psychology and sociology. She attended eight years of college.
Leona had a passion for life and enjoyed many things, especially having a gift of writing and poetry. One of her cherished accomplishments was publishing a wonderful book of her beautiful poetry titled, “Leather and Lace” She also loved helping people, going to church, music and her pets.
No visitation or funeral services are planned. Cremation has been accorded by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
