Born March 27, 1932 in Peoria to Herbert and Helena (Williams) Doubet, she married James Lee Black on November 11, 1951. He died April 18, 2017. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Donna Lane and Marion Borland.
Surviving are two daughters, Karen Stroops of Wataga and Carol Dreyer of Peoria; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris) Wickert of Peoria, Craig Scott of Peoria, Steve Stroops of Wataga, Misty Dreyer of Peoria, Kim (Justin) Reynolds of Galesburg, Matt Dreyer of Peoria, and Patti Nixon of Altona, six great-grandchildren, Johnathan Cook, Samantha Wickert, Norah Wickert, Toby Reynolds, Zach Reynolds, and Robbie Nixon; one sister, Iola Modlin of Brandon, Florida; two brothers, Eldon (Sue) Doubet of Maryland and Alan (Linda) Doubet of Norwood; and many nieces and nephews.
She was a graduate of Farmington High School.
Jean worked with her husband Jim at their business J.L. Black TV & Appliance in Galesburg for many years until 1990. She then worked for Famous Barr/Macys in Peoria before retiring.
Jean loved cooking and baking especially for large family gatherings with her big extended family. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends and her grandchildren and doing puzzles.
A service celebrating Jean’s life will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2023 at the First Norwood Mennonite Church, 6605 West Jones Road in Norwood. Pastor Bob Nutzhorn will officiate.
