Born October 14, 1930 in Beloit, Wisconsin to Charles B. and Lucy (Detroye) Schureman, he married Corine F. “Coney” Scharf on June 27, 1953 in Aurora, Indiana. She died January 8, 2015 in Green Valley. He also was preceded in death by his parents and one great-granddaughter, Jane Wallenfang.
Surviving are son Tom (Lisa) Schureman of Green Valley, daughter Jean (Jeff) Ringenberg of Peoria, and son Bill (Kate) Schureman of Morton. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Amy (Marcus) DeKeyser of Frankfort, Laura (Tom) Wallenfang of Peoria, Katie (Bill) Wilson of Aurora, Sarah (Jordan) Williams of Morton, Bobby (Amelia) Schureman of Pekin and Tommy Schureman of Hannibal, Missouri; fifteen great-grandchildren, one sister, Mary Dalton of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and two nieces and four nephews. He also leaves his special friend, Shirley Schroeder of Metamora.
Chuck grew up in Green Valley, where he graduated from both the grade and high schools. He went on to Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana, where he graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physics and Mathematics. He met his wife Coney at Hanover.
Chuck attended officer's training during college then entered the service upon graduation in 1953. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War overseas in Japan. He attained the rank of Captain.
Upon leaving the service, Chuck worked at Caterpillar, Inc. in their service department for 16 1/2 years. During these years they lived in Illinois, Minnesota, Kentucky and finally back to Morton, IL in 1964. In 1972, Chuck formed Control Service, Inc., an industrial sales company and served as its president until retiring in 2013.
After living in the best neighborhood on East Hazelwood St. in Morton for 25 years, he and Coney moved in 1989 to his family farm in Green Valley, IL. They enjoyed many happy gatherings there with family and friends. Chuck was devoted to his wife and family. He loved gardening and fixing things. If something needed fixing he was the first one to be called. He was known to grow the best sweet corn and melons and he loved sharing produce with others. Later in life Chuck found a wonderful companion in Shirley Schroeder. They enjoyed many outings together and she was a welcome part of the family.
He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria for nearly 60 years. He had served on the board of Elders and was a longtime member of the Centered in Christ Sunday school class. He and Coney served on the steering committee for Young Life and were instrumental in bringing Young Life to Morton.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 27th at Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria. Visitation will be at the church from 2 to 4 p.m. preceding the service. Military rites will be accorded at the Green Valley Cemetery during a private inurnment. Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
