Larry was born in Paris, Kentucky on August 29, 1937. In the early 1940’s his father moved the family to a working tobacco farm in Winchester, KY where he was raised along with his two brothers. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a degree in Geography. While attending college he joined ROTC and began his career with the US Army. He attended jump school in Ft. Campbell, KY and flight school in Ft. Rucker, AL. He was a pilot of both helicopters and fixed wing planes. His military career included three tours of Viet Nam, graduation from the Command General Staff College in Leavenworth, Kansas, Commander of the Landsoutheast Aviation Branch of NATO in Izmir, Turkey and Airfield Commander of Simmons Army Airfield at Ft. Bragg, NC. He was honorably discharged after 20 years of service with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sandra L. Sanders (nee Ritter); his daughter, Gina K. Rodgers (Danny); his son, Stephen A. Sanders (Christie); his grandchildren, Justin C. Sanders and Nathan C. Sanders; his brother, Allen Sanders (Ruth); his brother, Ronnie Sanders as well as several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elsie Sanders (nee Humphries).
Col. Sanders was cremated. Memorial services with military honors will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 28 in the chapel of Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home, 135 Senoia Road, Peachtree City.
