Romulo Acevedo Sandoval, 72, won his earthly battle with brain cancer and passed away peacefully in his home on June 22, surrounded by his loving children, and wife of 45 years. On January 26, 1951, Romulo A. Sandoval was born to Feliciano and Micaela Sandoval in Donna, Texas. He was one of the youngest of many children raised by his parents. Romulo grew up in Donna and excelled in many sports, including boxing, track and field, and playing football for the Donna Redskins.
Romulo graduated from Donna High School in 1971, and attended Pan American University, where he worked towards a degree in social work. After spending much of his life as a migrant worker, Romulo dedicated his time as an advocate for the oppressed and the forgotten, from all walks of life. He devoted his life to helping others without discrimination, especially those who could not help themselves, and led them to find their voice.
Romulo and Alicia met during their high school years. They were married on October 8, 1977, and a little over a year later, they welcomed their first child, Romulo Toribio, “RT.” A few years later, their family continued to grow, welcoming their first daughter Alicia Anette. Romulo bravely relocated to Houston with the hope of providing a brighter future for his growing family. He soon secured work and had his family join him as they planted roots in Pasadena, TX. Three years later, they welcomed their second daughter, Cynthianne. Thereafter, Romulo began a successful career as a bus operator for Metro Transit Authority. He enjoyed driving various bus routes, exploring the city of Houston, and making friends along the way.
Romulo enjoyed welcoming and hosting others, ensuring there was plenty of food, music, and drinks for all in attendance, regardless of how big or small the occasion. He will be remembered without a doubt for his ceviche that many have tried to replicate. He loved watching movies, sports, and listening to music. Most importantly, he cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren. Romulo was always willing to educate others and share in a good debate. Above all, he enjoyed a good conversation where knowledge was exchanged.
Romulo was extremely proud of his family---his wife, Alicia, and his children, R.T., Anette and Cynthia. He dedicated his life to being a husband and father, ensuring his family had everything they needed, and so much of what they wanted. He exuded pride, hard work, and love, and showed it all in his own way. This love was most evident when Romulo’s home began to fill with grandkids. He made sure they were spoiled to no end. Whether he was offering dessert before dinner, or joining them for lunch at school, he showed up, all the time, for everything. Romulo was someone you could count on no matter what you asked of him.
Romulo is survived by his wife, Maria Alicia Sandoval, son, Romulo T. Sandoval (R.T.) (wife Amanda Sandoval, granddaughters Alexis Marie Sandoval, Abigail Michaela Sandoval), daughter, Alicia Anette Sandoval (husband Brian James Figat, grandsons Lincoln Rome Figat, Kai Gibson Figat and granddaughter Arden Cove Figat), and daughter, Cynthianne Felix (husband Robert G. Felix Jr., grandson Xavier Gregory Felix, and granddaughter Arielle Grace Felix).
He also leaves behind his sisters, Epifania, Lupe, Gloria, and Nellie; brothers, Filo, Emigdio, Pablo Sr., Jose, Tony, Luis, Mike; and many nieces and nephews.
Romulo was preceded in death by his parents Feliciano and Micaela, siblings Reyes, Marta, and Genaro, as well as nephews Benito Montemayor, Tony Yanez, and Albert Sandoval.
