I had the good fortune to have Mr. Baker as my American History teacher at SRHS.  His enthusiasm for the subject was contagious.  My condolences to the family and friends of this wonderful man.

You know a teacher is memorable when you google them 40+ years after graduating.

Mr. Baker was such a wonderful teacher.  He was an inspiration to all of his students. I am very sorry to see of his passing but know that our kind and loving God will see you through the most difficult times.

Bob was truly a legacy and someone you could really look up to for guidance and life lessons.  If you'll look up in the night sky you may see an one extra brightly lit shining star, that would be Bob.

I only knew Mr. Baker from his visits to SRHS faculty lunches, but he was always such a bright spot. The high regard from his co-workers was a testament of his shining personality.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time of loss. May God bless you and comfort you.

Mr. Baker is one of the highlight memories of my education at Sam Rayburn.  He related to people well, students and coworkers alike, so that we all were open to his ideas, his teaching, his views on life.  For many years as I visited the dentist - Dr. Gail Campbell-, I saw paintings right before me that were the work of Mr. Baker.  Awesome!  And then, in recent years, I would see him at various community functions, most recently when he greeted me at South Main Baptist as I visited for the baptism of twin sons of friends of mine.  GOOD PEOPLE are hard to find; Mr. Baker was one of those good people!  The LORD comforts those who grieve.  Matthew 5:4  Danny Schnautz, Rayburn '85,

Mr. Baker was an example of teaching at the highest level of the profession.  I was not the best student in high school, but I was the best that I could be in Mr. Bakers class because I saw the effort, energy, and enthusiasm that he brought to the classroom.  I know that the community will miss him greatly.
I will keep his family in my prayers.

A true ACADEMIC ALL-STAR!  Baker History was a LEGEND for 11th graders at South Houston and Sam Rayburn. He not only was a great teacher who made us work hard, he challenged us to have nimble minds and to stretch ourselves, while entertaining us. And, he loved those Baylor Bears!!!

I thank God for letting Bob Baker cross my path in life. He tought my children @ SRHS, I was his nurse in DR. Turners office, he brought sunshine into our office each time he walked in, even on a gloomey day.

What great memories I have of Mr. Baker and being in his class at SRHS.  He made learning fun and was such a great role model for high school kids.  He will be missed.

Dear Betty and Kelli, Our lives are much richer for knowing Bob over the years. The example he was to all the boys growing up on Effie Lane has lasted a lifetime and the stories have been retold many times. I was in his Government class in 1976 and realized then what a difference a great teacher can have on a student. Our gift from him for our wedding, over 30 years ago, is still a treasure for us to enjoy. We will miss him standing at the church door reminding us of being late and consider ourselves very fortunate to have memories of him to share. Betty please call us at any time if you need a hand... we are praying for you all.

Mr. Baker was a wonderful teacher. He was my Govt teach in '78 and would challenge us while still making it fun. He was also a wonderful artist. One of his beautiful bluebonnet paintings still hangs in my parents' home. Know that he will be missed and my prayers go out to Betty, Kelli, and all his family.

My husband Greg Wilhoite was one of Mr.Bakers students...he graduated from Sam Rayburn High School in 1987. He was in one of History classes and also on his Golf team where he lettered in Golf his Freshamn year. I (his wife am writing this for my husband as he now legally blind and can't see to do so himself). He talked very highly of him and says it was a true honer to play on his Golf team.
We wish your family the very best during your time of grieving...but stay close to the lord and he will help you all through this very difficult time.

My condolences to the family, I was also a student of Mr. Baker's and he made lasting impression on me as he did many students. His blackboard creations of art were beautiful.  He was my home room teacher for three years at South Houston High School and he was my favorite teacher. He was a wonderful man and a great teacher.

Mr. Baker was my favorite teacher. I always looked forward to his class. He made history so interesting, you couldn't wait to get to his room. He kept us amused with his jokes. He will be greatly missed. My sympathy to his family. Class of 70

Mr. Baker was a great Government Teacher.  He made learning Government fun, and I am truly saddened by his loss!  He was my absolute favorite teacher throughout my high school years -Lori Magdos (Dickinson, Texas)

Even though I did not have the pleasure of having Mr. Baker as a teacher, I was very fortunate to have him as a neighbor. Our street had many boys on it and we would always play basketball in my driveway. Many times Mr. Baker would come down and play with us. He always gave us a "lesson" in playing the game. He also went wade fishing with my friend Gerald Foshee and me several times. He was always keeping us laughing telling stories. He was a great mentor to our Effie Lane gang and he will be sorely missed.

In the sixties I  first heard the name, Bobby Baker, from my mother, Mary Ann Nowak, who worked in the attendance office at Sam Rayburn High School.  Later I heard it from my husband, Leon, who was his student at South Houston High School and thought it was awesome that they could listen to the Houston Colt 45 baseball team games after they'd completed their History test!  In 1991 when I joined the SRHS faculty and family, I worked on the second floor with Bobby where the English Department and History Department were neighbors.  After Leon and I married  in 1996, Bobby painted the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Round Top, TX, as well as the Schiege Guest House and Gold Wing motorcycle we rode to the wedding - and the pictures hang over our fire place.  Bobby Baker was the educator and friend who will be remembered by many of us.

My sympathy goes out to you and your family. Mr. Baker was a true friend, my favorite teacher ever, a phenomenal artist but most of all a great person.
I know that my Dad, Carter Lomax, thought the world of Bobby both as his principal at Sam Rayburn and his friend.
I had the pleasure of seeing you both at my father's and my mother's funeral and I was truly honored by your presence.
I will never forget the rhetoric that he and I had in our world history classes at Rayburn. We both had sharp tongues but one thing was for sure, he always brought out the best of me as a student.
I am so sorry that I will not be able to make it to the services but be assured that Mr. Baker will be missed but never forgotten. I have 5 pieces of his artwork in my home and they will be cherished forever.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Baker's death. He was a tremendous teacher and I am happy to say that he is the primary reason I became a social studies teacher too.  He made history come alive.  When I taught school, I always modeled myself after Mr. Baker.  He had high expectations and clearly loved his students.He was also very proud of his family.  I feel honored to have not only had him as a teacher for two classes but to have served as a student assistant for him as well. He also taught my sisters and we were all so moved when he came to my father's funeral several years ago, even though we had not seen him for many, many years.  I am also extremely happy that before my mother passed away she bought me a Robert Baker painting which hangs on the wall in my home. Mr. Baker was my American History teacher when I was a junior at Sam Rayburn. He was a wonderful teacher and had the knack of getting a roomful of teenagers to actually listen to his lessons. Because he was a natural storyteller and a remarkable person. He made sure we learned but he made it fun at the same time. I don't even remember some of the other teachers I had but that is not the case with this teacher - my favorite, Mr. Baker.

I had Mr. Baker 2 years for History class at Sam Rayburn..I graduated in 1966.  He was the only teacher I can remember that made a lasting impression on me with the way he lectured and taught.  I have always had the highest respect for him.  He will be missed by so many but he's in our Father's Kingdom now.  My prayers are with you and the family.

Bob was my friend and painting mentor and I will miss him dearly. His encouragement and guidance with painting has enriched my life in so many ways. I am truly blessed to have known him. Bob was also a teacher to both of my children at Sam Rayburn HS and they both considered him a special teacher. My prayers and sympathy are extended to his family. Like many others have written, Mr. baker was my favorite teacher of all time.  His passion for the Civil War instilled a love of that era that I have tried to pass on to my own children.  I'm sure he will enjoy his heavenly discussions with Mr. Lee and Mr. Lincoln.  My condolences to the family of this fine gentleman.

What an amazing teacher Mr. Baker was! I truly enjoyed the classes I had with him at Rayburn (Class of '89). My mother taught with him and my daddy was friends with him, so I feel blessed that I knew him a little better than most of my friends. Plus I grew up with some of his artwork - yes with windmills and bluebonnets - in our home. I have always appreciated his sense of humor and his dedication to making us be the best students we could be. (He also recognized I was NOT a good test taker and allowed me to do extra credit work writing about history. I truly enjoyed the lessons and class discussions.) 
My heart goes out to your family as I do realize he will be missed greatly. I hope you realize the impact he had on thousands of students. He made history come to life at Sam Rayburn H.S. - in that little corner classroom, upstairs, with no windows. He lit up the room with excitement and through storytelling - pure outstanding teaching.)

Bob Baker was a wonderful Father and Grandpa. I will always remember he and Betty coming to Plano for a visit and watching Brandon play soccer or Brenna dance.
