James Medford Chambers went home to be with The LORD on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at the age of 92. He was born on March 15, 1930, in Waynesville, North Carolina to James Guy and Hazel Medford Chambers. He grew up on the family farm in the Iron Duff community along with his brothers Howard and Earl Chambers. For a brief time, the family moved to Vancouver, Washington, where his parents worked in the shipyards. James missed the mountains of Western North Carolina, so he came back home and lived with his grandmother until his parents returned. Following the end of World War II, James proudly served in United States Army Air Force as a Technician Fifth Grade overseas, primarily in Japan, from August 1946 through March 1948. Upon his return, he worked in Detroit, Michigan in automobile assembly furthering his lifelong love of automobiles. Missing his family, he returned to North Carolina where he met and married the love of his life, Dorothy Elizabeth West on July 30, 1951. Seeking permanent employment and greater opportunities, they moved to Pasadena, Texas where James began his career at the Champion Paper Mill in October 1952, where he worked for 34 ½ years. They raised five sons and one daughter during the Pasadena years and James enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, and automobiles. In 1986, James retired from the paper mill and in 1987 they moved to Carlisle, Texas on Lake Livingston, where they enjoyed 34 years of gardening, fishing, shopping for groceries with triple coupons, playing with their boxers, (Brutus, Bulger and Rocky) and living in the East Texas woods. James and Dorothy enjoyed frequent trips into the Pasadena area and annual trips to both Western North Carolina and Florida to visit extended family. In December 2022, they returned to Pasadena to be closer to family.
James is survived by Dorothy, his loving and devoted wife of over 71 years of marriage and their sons Joseph Chambers and Angela, Gary Chambers and Jodi, James W. Chambers and Vanessa Davis, Robert Chambers and Teresa, and daughter Rene’ Fleming and Steven. James and Dorothy’s son, John Earl Chambers, and their grandson, Christopher Alan Chambers, preceded him to Heaven. James and Dorothy’s grandchildren are Jerrod Chambers, Jason Chambers and Alyssa, Brandon Chambers and Lauren, Christina Watson, Cory Wilson and Hanna, Peyton Petry, Morgan Chambers, Hannah Chambers and Jesse, and Samuel Chambers, along with numerous great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express our gratitude to the doctors and nurses at HCA Southeast Hospital in Pasadena and the caring staff of Magnolia Hospice for their care of Mr. Chambers during the past month. We would also like to express our deepest appreciation to the caring and committed staff at the Reserve at Pasadena Assisted Living Community for their love and care for both Mr. and Mrs. Chambers.
