Gerald Edward Garner was born on December 17, 1937 in Jacksonville, Texas to Morris and Virginia Garner. He passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 5, at the age of 75. He is preceded in death by his parents and twin brother, Gene Garner. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Geraldine Garner; three daughters: Ginger Moon and husband Bobby, Jodie Scherer and husband Chris, and Christy Garner; son, Gerald “Bubba” Garner, Jr. and wife Melissa; five grandchildren: Megan Moon, Corbin Scherer, Morgan Garner, Chloe Scherer, and David Garner; his sister, Rosemary Moore, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gerald grew up in Palestine, Texas and received a history degree from the University of North Texas. There, he met Geraldine Lay and they married in 1959. After serving in the army, which included a tour in Fairbanks, Alaska, he returned to his native Texas to begin a successful career as a power tool distributor with Ingersoll Rand and K&M Tools. For over twenty years, he rode in the Salt Grass Trail Ride, the last several times as the Assistant Wagon Boss.
Gerald will be remembered as a working man. His hands were always busy: fixing a broken toy, changing the oil, cutting the grass, or rooting for his beloved Longhorns. He selflessly gave of his time and knowledge to help friends and strangers alike. He was a true southern gentleman, and his quick wit and dry sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him. Most of all, he will be missed by a family who faithfully loved their “Gerald,” “Dad,” and “Poppy.”
