Vietnam veteran Gerald (Sonny) Eugene Cole of Pasadena, Texas passed away on Monday, September 5, 2022, at the age of 74 in Pasadena, Texas. Born in Kansas City, Missouri to his parents, Winford Wallace Cole and Jessie Lee Cole, he was the youngest of six children and earned the life-long nickname of “Sonny.”
During his youth, Sonny joined the Boy Scouts of America where he rose through the ranks until he achieved the highest honor of becoming an Eagle Scout. As an Eagle Scout, Sonny embraced the scout motto of “Be Prepared” as his life’s motto. These words gave him a sense of direction, identity, and purpose throughout his life as Sonny always carried with him a compass, measuring tape, and a flashlight, and was always very loyal, helpful, and kind to those around him. Shortly after, Sonny’s family relocated to Pasadena, Texas where he attended Pasadena High School and met the love of his life, Lida, who he regularly referred to as his “Sweet Biscuit” throughout his life.
At the age 17, Sonny enlisted in the Army where he served 3 years, being stationed in Germany from 1964 to 1965 and touring Vietnam from 1966 to 1967. Sonny returned home and married his high school sweetheart Lida in February 1968. Sonny was later honorably discharged from the Army in June 1971. Once discharged, Sonny began a 35-year career with Houston Lighting & Power and worked his way through the ranks as a yardman to eventually becoming the Plant Supervisor of the Webster and Deepwater facilities. During this time, Sonny also became a Boy Scout Master for his two sons’ troops. Sonny was a respected member of his community where he and his family attended the Central Church of Christ and later attended the Waters Road Church of Christ in Pasadena, Texas.
Sonny is survived by his beautiful wife of 54 years, Lida, son Braden and his wife Tracy, daughter Corrine, son Preston and his wife Tabitha, and his grandchildren Hailey, Christian, Maggie, and Daniel.
We honor Sonny’s life and memory in this celebration today on September 22, 2022 from 12:00PM-2:00PM.
