Edna Jane Mitchell, longtime and loved resident of La Porte, Texas, was reunited with the Lord on December 9th, 2019, a peaceful Monday evening. Edna is survived by a large and loving immediate family; Daughter Kelly Wolff and husband Fred, daughter Kathryn Reynolds and husband Conrad, grandson Zachery Reynolds and wife Callie, grandson Easton Reynolds, brother Charles Cox and wife Bobbie, Sisters Mary Swindoll, Polly Horton, Jeanie Babineaux and husband Lynwood, numerous nieces, nephews, and various extended family members that were blessed to share life with her. She is reunited in heaven with her father and mother Kitty Louise and Vernon Cox, grandfather “Papa” Bennett, sister Catherine Bailey, and daughter Kathleen Mitchell.
Edna was born in Bruce, Mississippi on March 10th, 1942. She thoroughly enjoyed classical movies, reading, gardening, meaningful conversations, attending estate sales with her sisters, and most importantly, spending time with the ones she loved, especially her grandchildren. Though she completed her general studies in Mississippi, she later went back to school at the age of 44 to obtain her Associates Degree in Radiology from San Jacinto College, where she received an award for the “Most Outstanding Student.” Following her collegiate studies, she upheld an exceptional career as a Chief Radiographer, where she served diligently in her field for over 20 years until retirement.
Despite her humble beginnings, Edna was certainly no stranger to hard work, even in her elder years. Not only was she an example of strength, diligence and endurance for her peers and co-workers, but also her children, grandchildren and other loved ones. Edna’s strength, which truly encompassed her until the day of her passing, was just as spiritual and emotional as it was physical. As a mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, she was the pinnacle of support, comfort and reassurance. She would encourage prayer in times of trouble, laughter in times of sorrow, and faith in times of hopelessness.
Edna truly made a house feel like a home everywhere she went. If you came to her house, you never left hungry... and if she joined you at your house, SHE never left hungry! She thoroughly enjoyed meaningful conversations over coffee and desert afterwards, and always left you with a smile.
Edna often said the phrase, “you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone!”…and she was right. While her contagious smile, hugs, laughter, and meaningful conversations will certainly be missed the most, they are also what stays with us in this side of life. Edna Jane Mitchell will forever be remembered and cherished as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and warrior in Christ.
