David was born May 7, 1943, in DeQuincy, Louisiana, to Macle Drake and Arthur Buster Berry. He was primarily raised by his mother and step father, Harvey Clark, in Starks, Louisiana. During the summers of his high schools years, he worked in Houston to help support his mother and family. This matureness paved the way for a life long mission to always care for his wife, children, siblings, nieces and nephews, or provide for people in need. He graduated Starks High School in 1962 and permanently moved to Texas the same night to start working. He would later meet his future "Bride" and the love of his life, Velva Murphy that same year.
David was drafted to the Vietnam war and started boot camp in April 26th, 1965 at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Three months later, David and Velva married on June 26, 1965, in Braggadocio, Missouri, at her grandparents’ house. David served in the United States Army Infantry, Company A First Battalion until March 1967, when he came home to his Bride of what would be nearly 55 years. David was over the moon when each of their children, Joey, Lisa and Dana, were born.
David coached baseball from 1974 to the early 80s and then became an umpire. As adults, his players would often see him out and about and still refer to him as Coach Berry. There were numerous kids who grew up in the Berry household and still affectionately call him "Dad".
David was an avid reader and loved watching old western classics and American Pickers. He was a member of the Houston Gun Collectors Association for over 20 years and held office of Secretary twice during his membership. He was also a member of the Gulf Coast Knife Club, a Mason.
David worked at Armco Steele in the early 70s and started working at Lonza Inc in the late 70s where he retired in 2004 as a lead operator. After David retired, you would often find him set up at gun shows on weekends enjoying the time with his children and grandsons. It was more about the camaraderie and meeting people. He forged many friendships that spanned the last couple of decades. David also volunteered at the Salvation Army during Christmas.
David leaves his loving memories to be cherished and celebrated by his wife of 54 years, Velva Murphy Berry; daughter Lisa Davis and companion Rocky Bradway; daughter Dana Berry; daughter-in-law Claudia Hobbs; grand-daughter Alexandra Stoffers; grandsons Ethan Berry and wife Reselle, Murphy Berry and John David Alexander; great grand children Destiny and Leo Stoffers; siblings Donald Smith, Willie Berry, Billy Chapman, Dallas Berry, Suzette Berry and Sonny Shreeves; Bella, Max and Molly. David was preceded in death by his parents, Macle and Harvey Clarke, Louise and Buster Berry, Ella and Joe Murphy; son Joey Berry; siblings Patricia Smith, Alberta Shreeves, James Berry, Mary Ashworth, Sharon and Buddy Poole, and Donald Clark. David never met a stranger and was beloved and will be missed by all.
