Vernon Garnet MacKay, born in Millsville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia on October 27, 1932, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2024, in Duncan, BC. He was predeceased by Mary Luella Ladd, his wife of 57 years, and grandson Jeffrey MacKay. He will be dearly missed by a daughter, Susan, and sons Daniel (Jody), Lewis (Anne), Robert, and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Vernon graduated from Stellarton High School (1950), Nova Scotia Agricultural College (1952), McGill University (B.Sc.Agr,1954, & M.Sc., 1956), and the University of Alberta (PhD, 1963). He retired in 1995 after more than 40 years in various positions of increasing responsibility in animal nutrition and research, sales, marketing, and senior management in the agriculture and food industry in Canada and Southeast Asia. This work took him all over Canada, in addition to South East Asia, New Zealand, Russia, and Europe.
Along side of his professional career, Vern pursued a strong interest and practice in world finance, stock markets and investments.
During his long life Vern lived in many different homes, from the east coast of Canada to the west coast on Vancouver Island; as well as in Singapore and Malaysia.
Vern and Mary- Lou embarked on many vacations together around the world including; Greece, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Scotland, Thailand, Cuba, Hawaii and more.
True to his roots, he often referred to himself as a proud Scotsman. Pipes and fiddles will carry him to his first home, Nova Scotia.
In the spring of 2025 Vernon's ashes will be interned in the family plot at Gladstone Cemetery, Four Mile Brook, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. The date for internment and Celebration of Life will be communicated in the new year.
