Robert Douglas McKenzie, affectionately known as Bobby, passed away on July 3, 2024, in Victoria ICU at the young age of 20. Bobby was unable to overcome his injuries after an accident on June 21st. Born on Nov 11, 2003, at NRGH, Bobby was the cherished son of Richelle and Darrin McKenzie and the loving brother of Alex. Bobby's family was important to him. He is survived by his Gedo and namesake Bob Bodnar, grandparents Arlina (Mark) uncles Chris Bodnar, Chris McKenzie, (Eryk, Kathleen(Jordan) Alexis) Kevin McKenzie, (Dakota, Brandon, Jacob) aunts Amanda Ruel and Julia Roesner. With only 9 months apart, Mason Bodnar was more a brother than a cousin. Russell, and Alana more uncle and aunt.
He loved being “Uncle Bobby” to Kayson, Brixley, Stella, and Kali and looked forward to baby Austin being born. Bobby was the “kin keeper” keeping in touch with so many family members through social media. His Grandparents came from such large families that he had many great aunts, uncles and cousins and he loved them all.
He was predeceased by Grandma Elaine Bodnar, Grandpa Doug McKenzie, great grandparents and many aunts and uncles.
Bobby graduated in 2021 with a Double Dogwood in both French and English and attended a year at VIU. His time in Drama and ABC news along with his love of sports made him want to be a Broadcaster.
He was a very active athlete trying almost all the sports during his short life. Born a wrestler, he attended his first wrestling tournament when he was 11 days old and was a Mat rat until old enough to participate himself, becoming a provincial top 6 placer in all 4 years of eligibility.
He played soccer from a young age and was a part of the ADSS jr team. He was part of the junior golf program and worked as a club washer. He also played rugby. He joined the PBL mid island pirates baseball team as a Bantam and continued with both the Junior and Senior teams playing 5 years with the program. He played AV minor hockey from the age of 4 playing both Rep and house from Mites through U21. He played a year of men's league after graduation and was also a part of the Junior hockey Alberni Bombers for a season.
Bobbys love of sports and outdoors carried over to his jobs as well. He was a volunteer coach with the elementary wrestling program and his job at the multiplex and Glenwood allowed him to be on the ice for skate patrol and activity leader for birthday parties. Working with the Port Authority at China Creek Campground allowed him to be outdoors and make connections with the seasonal campers.
Everyone loved Bobby. He was genuine in his friendships and didn’t fit into any one group. Bobby didn’t care if you were academic, athletic, or artistic he made friends wherever he went. He was blessed to have so many friends, many who were more like family, a crew of “Bonus moms and siblings” ready to support however needed.
Bobby will be missed by all. Please join us to celebrate him.
