Words cannot express the incredible impact Tom Vinca has had on the Erie community and on me, personally. His strong leadership and advocacy led a small family service agency to become one of major impact throughout northwest PA, strengthening families and changing countless lives for the better. Personally, he was my supervisor, mentor, and friend.  He held me to a high standard, always giving honest and direct feedback, believing in my abilities, building my confidence, and encouraging me to grow even further.  His passing is a profound loss. I will miss his energy, his wisdom, his laughter, and his support.  My sincere condolences go to his family; his love for you all was endless.  Rest in Peace, Tom.  Your legacy lives on.

I began to work with Tom  in 1987 when Family Services was a small agency. Under Toms leadership the agency grew to be a major force in NW Pa. I worked with him for 25 years benefiting from his expertise and wisdom. I am so sad and grieved at the loss of this great man. Ann and family please accept my condolences. May he rest in the peace and love of our lord.

Tom touched so many lives in the very best way. I'm grateful I got the chance to know him. I called him “dad”. He shared once this quote with me “ To Bless to be Stress” I carry this quote with me when I need to be grateful for life.

Our children went to OLC grade school together when Anne was employed there and later I worked under Tom at FSNWPA from 1990 until his retirement. Tom gave me a job that taught me more than any classroom ever did. I even quit once and he hired me back… which he rarely did. I had great respect for him and his leadership. Rest in peace Boss.

I have such fond memories traveling up to PA from TN as a child and going over to “The Vinca’s” for dinners and gatherings. Those visits had such an impact on me in some very profound ways. I loved hearing such lively and robust discussions on a variety of issues and topics that were unfamiliar to me at the time and will always remember Uncle Tom’s smile and laugh. I’m grateful for those precious memories and even more grateful for the role Uncle Tom had on my own father’s life. 

To the family- I am so deeply sorry for this huge loss. I know there are no words, but I am sending love and comfort right now as you navigate this tremendous grief.

In 1991, after working in social services for just over 1 year, Tom interviewed me for a single open position. He also interviewed a gentleman whose father, a psychiatrist, could bring the strength of psychiatry to the organization. In my interview, Tom asked me what I intended to do with my future, to which I answered that I intended to pursue a graduate degree in Social Work. 

After the interviews, Tom chose to offer me the position at Family Services in the Family Based Mental Health program, a decision that laid the groundwork for much of my success today. Tom told me that he chose me because though the other applicant had the same amount of experience, he had moved jobs twice, while I had stayed with one agency. He also appreciated that I knew my future.

Tom was a visionary when it came to choosing staff. 

I think of you often Tom and am grateful for giving me a chance to prove you made the right decision. One that I promise you, I have taken seriously since you did. Bless you and your family as you enjoy eternal peace with our Lord.

I worked under Tom’s leadership at Family Services for 19 years. He valued integrity and honesty.
