Retired Commander James Joseph McDermott, United States Navy, of West Chester, PA, passed away on January 10, 2019. He was the husband of 46 years to the late Simone (Salvas) McDermott. He led a distinguished 32 year career in the United States Navy, initially enlisting to serve aboard submarines, and eventually rising to the rank of Commander leading two submarine rescue ships that directed a deep sea diving operation that set a new world record of 870 feet. For this, he was awarded the Legion of Merit.
He loved being at sea and was known as a colorful man with a sharp sense of humor. He is survived by his two sons and their wives; Michael Thomas McDermott and Cathi Sitzman of Washington, DC; and James Joseph McDermott, III and Ann Macon McDermott of Wayne, PA, along with six grandchildren and three great grand children. Services and burial with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. at a date to determined. All are welcome.
