Charles L. Settar Jr., 76, a longtime resident of Paoli, Pennsylvania, passed away on August 3rd, 2024. Born on May 5th, 1948 in Philadelphia, PA, to parents Lou and Elizabeth, Chuck excelled in the classroom, on the gymnastics mat, and in the orchestra, and graduated early from Germantown High School in 1965. Chuck proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1971 as an Electrician's Mate on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise. After returning from service, he married his true love, Ellen Adamek Muehsam in 1971. Ellen and Chuck met at a boarding house "down the shore" in Ocean City, NJ during the summer of '67; they faithfully exchanged letters while he was serving in Vietnam. Together they had five wonderful children. To support his family, Chuck worked steadily for the Bell Atlantic telephone company for almost 40 years, climbing the ladder to management and then happily retired.
Chuck was an avid outdoorsman who loved to seek peace deep in the woods, and to camp, fish, and hunt. A member of the local gun club, he enjoyed target practice and competing as a marksman, and you could often find him in his basement making his own bullets. He also used the basement as his personal woodworking studio surrounded by the smell of sawdust and fresh cut pine. A loyal and consistent patron of both the Chester County and Paoli Libraries, Chuck loved to read all hours of the day and night. You could find all genres piled up around the house. He loved to learn about the celestial realm and would share his knowledge of constellations with his wife and children, especially when they would take night walks along the shores of Ocean City, NJ, where they vacationed religiously. He also enjoyed learning about local history and would cruise around Chester County with Ellen in their convertible BMW to find good picnic spots, local points of interest, and landscapes to photograph. Chuck was known to appreciate a good scotch or bourbon and lived for steak night. He was a lover of dogs and was likely greeted in Heaven by his beloved fur babies Freckles, Shannon, and Cassie. Chuck was also preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth (Maxvitat) Settar, his sister Tina Segletes, father Lou, and stepmother Nancy (Shwarz) Settar.
Chuck is survived by his wife Ellen, and daughters Carly Koukos and her husband Christopher, Christine Hale and her husband Stephen, Kimberly Settar and her husband Jon Leonard, Diana Settar and her partner Josiah Greatens, and son Matthew Settar and his wife Rebecca, as well as four grandchildren Elsie Hale, Benjamin Hale, Luke Koukos, and Cassidy Settar, and his nephew, David Segletes. Chuck’s cat buddy, one-eyed Willie, faithfully kept him company during his final days.
