Paula Fagaragan Ines, born on June 15, 1922, passed away peacefully at 102 years of age, surrounded by three generations of kin, in her Los Angeles, CA family home on October 6, 2024. She is remembered as a venerable matriarch, lover of Los Angeles sports teams, and prolific gardener.
Paula was born the youngest of 5 children to Teodoro and Marcelina Fagaragan in Ilocos Norte Philippines. She was the first in her family to complete University and become a school teacher in Badoc and in the capital city of Manila where she married Quirino Ines.
Paula lived through many trials and tribulations during her 102 years on earth having witnessed the major cultural and political shifts in the Philippines: American Commonwealth, Japanese Occupation (WWII), Philippines Independence, and the rapid modernization and infrastructure building of the 1970s.
Paula migrated to Los Angeles, CA in 1978 with her husband Quirino and 2 of their children Nelson and Angelina. In America she experienced the Los Angeles riots of 1992; the sudden and tragic death of her husband by vehicle accident in 1993; the 1994 Northridge Earthquake that destroyed the city; testing positive for COVID 19 in 2020. She was no stranger to times of crisis!
These events thrusted her into the role of primary caregiver, provider, and, at times, sole parent to her children and grandchildren. She exhibited immense sense of duty, tenacity, and pride for her family. She provided childcare for 5 of her grandchildren; her life’s wish was to live past 100 and to attend the wedding of one of the grandchildren she raised. Her final wish was granted with her having witnessed the marriage of her youngest grandson Justin Batugo in September 2024. She is loved and revered by her family for her many quiet sacrifices and commitment to fighting the good fight.
Paula Fagaragan Ines is survived by her 5 children who she brought to America: Orlando, Dudley, Arsenio, Nelson, and Angelina and their respective children and grandchildren.
