Allan was born on August 17th 1957 in Madison, WI to Darvin & Patricia Smith. His childhood was spent in Eagan, MN with his younger siblings; Julie, Kathy, and Stan. Every summer he would visit his Grandparents, George & Grace’s, farm in Tracy, MN where he worked on the golf course with Pops, and learned to cook by watching Grandma Grace and his Mom, Pat, in the kitchen. Allan also helped as a short order cook in Mel and Nancy’s bar in Tyler, MN. He loved to fly and learned with his Uncle Glen and his Dad, taking his first solo flight even before obtaining his driver’s license.
Allan enlisted in the Minnesota Air National Guard right out of High School with one of his best friends and was honorably discharged in February 1980. He spent two memorable years as an Air Traffic Controller in Peoria, IL where he met many of his lifelong friends and the love of his life Joan. After getting fired on his day off during the infamous PATCO strike, he explored other pursuits that utilized his natural gifts of leadership, intelligence, courage, compassion, and persuasion. Not knowing for sure where to direct his efforts he started drilling oil wells and soliciting investors with his Uncle Norman near Grayville, IL. Then after a move to St. Charles, MO in 1982, Allan got into real estate sales, which introduced him to the mortgage business where he spent much of his career and met many more lifelong friends. Around 1999, He and a colleague decided to go their own way and start their own business, NorStar Financial. Business went well for several years which allowed Allan to enjoy his version of the good life and explore his other interests to a larger degree.
A self-described jack of all trades, Allan enjoyed many different pastimes when he wasn’t focused on business. His love for family was undeniable, regularly making trips to Tracy and Grayville to visit relatives throughout his life. He was very social and could always find an excuse to grab a drink or visit the golf course with friends. Allan introduced several folks to flying over the years and always had a big smile when he gave them control of the aircraft for the first time. Later in life, he explored his passion of music in greater depths, fixing and tweaking old electronics to find that perfect vinyl sound that he loved. Allan and Joan could be found many nights dancing on their patio under the moonlight enjoying that perfect sound. He spent many hours working on his vehicles including his 1967 Mercury Cougar, 1994 Cadillac Coupe Deville, and 2004 Ford Thunderbird. In his retirement, Allan decided to work once again at a golf course, this time in Palm Bay, FL. He was passionate about all of his pursuits, but he was especially avid about cooking. Almost everyone that knew him has tried one of his recipes that he spent countless hours perfecting until he got it just the way he liked it. Which in a high percentage of cases everyone else enjoyed as well. He paid particular attention to perfecting his pizza crust. Allan was known to be the life of the party, but he was also a God-fearing man whose belief stayed with him to the end of his life.
In addition to his wife Joan, children Dustin & Darrin, daughter in-law Alma, and granddaughter Addison, Allan is survived by his parents, Darvin & Patricia, as well as his siblings Julie, Kathy, Stan and sister in-law Cindy.
