Carmel ~ Rosemary Homer Blackstone, beloved resident of Carmel Valley Manor, died on May 20th at the age of 88. Born in Seattle, Washington and raised in Burlingame, California, Rosemary lived her life with zest, energy, and compassion. She attended the Hamlin School in San Francisco followed by two years at Smith College, then graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1949. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gama sorority.
Ambitious and industrious, Rosemary began her career in the stock room at the San Francisco Emporium and worked her way up to a buyer position before marrying George A. Blackstone in 1955. They had two children, Carl and Amy, and raised their family in Hillsborough, California, where Rosemary enjoyed her life as a mother and active community member.
Rosemary’s talent as a leader led her to a variety of civic organizations where she served with skill and grace, including as an elected member of the Hillsborough School Board, as a Conservation Vice-president of the Garden Club of America, as a member of the Junior League of San Francisco and in numerous other civic organizations. The Hillsborough City Council honored her as Citizen of the Year in 1975.
Rosemary and George moved to Carmel, California in 1983 where she owned and operated a children’s clothing store, “Rosemary and George.” She continued serving her community as President of the Carmel Foundation and as President of the Carmel Valley Manor Residents’ Council. She was also a member of the Carmel Garden Club and the Casa Abrego Club.
Rosemary had a lively intelligence and infectious love of life that touched all who knew her. She was an avid world traveler, visiting all seven continents; a passionate bridge player, a lover of the arts and music, and an accomplished flower arranger. Rosemary spent the last 18 years of her life living at Carmel Valley Manor where she enjoyed a large community of friends and loving care from the extraordinary staff.
Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Marion Homer; her husband, George; her sister, Ann Hauberg, and brother, Charles Homer. She is survived by her children, Carl (Selden Prentice) of Seattle, Washington and Amy of San Francisco, California; two grandchildren, Kate and Hilary of San Jose California and numerous nieces and nephews.
