Carmel
Gordon Melville Robertson, 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Carmel Valley Ranch on May 20, 2018. He was a family man, devoted to his wife and quietly proud of his children.
Gordon was born on April 13, 1931 to Allastair and Elizabeth Robertson in Edinburgh, Scotland. He attended Daniel Stewarts College in Edinburgh. He excelled in athletics and rugby was his passion; he was a renowned scrum half and played for Scotland. He served in the British Army with the Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Gordon met Eleanor Shiel, playing tennis, the game they both loved. They were married in 1956 and their three sons, Graeme, Mark & Michael, were all born in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Gordon worked in Scottish retail and export to America. Due to business opportunities in America, he and Eleanor and their boys immigrated to Carmel on May 22, 1965. They established a Scottish import store, The Scottish Shop, on Ocean Avenue in Carmel. Four years later, they bought another retail location on Ocean Avenue, Robertsons. In addition to his retail operations, Gordon was a real estate investor. Twenty-three years after arriving in Carmel, Gordon and Eleanor sold the businesses and retired in 1988. Tragically, Eleanor died in 1989, a year after they retired.
Gordon married Anne Babin in 1991. They enjoyed 27 wonderful years together, traveling to many parts of the world. In addition, they enjoyed time between Carefree, Arizona and Carmel. Gordon loved to travel, play tennis, enjoyed motor cars and the company of good friends and family.
Gordon is survived by his wife Anne; his sons, Graeme (Christine) of Carmel, Mark (Lori) of Hood River, Oregon and Michael (Melissa) of Berkeley, California and his grandchildren, Andrew (Morgan) of Okinawa, Japan, Austin of Carmel, Matthew of Los Angeles and Eleanor of Hood River, Oregon. Gordon is also survived by two step-children, Pamela (Arturo) Miro of Panama City, Panama and Jeffrey (Kathy) Babin of Philadelphia and four step-grandchildren, Andres Miro and Isabel Miro of Panama City, Panama and Drew Babin and Liza Babin of Philadelphia.
Gordon preferred no memorial service. Contributions in his honor may be made to the Hospice Giving Foundation, 80 Garden Court, Ste. 201, Monterey, CA, 93940 or the charity of the donor’s choice. Please visit www.thepaulmortuary.com to sign Gordon’s guest book and leave messages for his family.
