Carol Anne (Voeffray) Johnson passed away quietly in her home on Sunday afternoon, July 14th. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Donald L. Johnson, in 2008. She is survived by her twin brother, Frank Voeffray (Bloomfield Hills, MI); by her three children and their partners: Welkin Johnson and wife Ruth Oppenheimer (Boston), Leslie Thompson and husband Larry (Salinas), and Sarah Johnson and her partner Paul Hastey (Del Rey Oaks). She is also survived by seven grandchildren - Tyler, Zach, Kacey, Brianna, Ava, Rusty and Alex - and two great-grandchildren, Maverick and Arianna.
Carol was born on August 9, 1941, in Detroit, MI. She first met Don, her future husband, when they were 7th grade classmates. They were married in their 20’s, and in the early years of their marriage Carol and Don moved frequently, living at different times on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula; in Seattle, WA; in Kalamazoo and then Detroit, Michigan; in Chicago, Il; and in Havre, MT., before settling in Del Rey Oaks in the summer of 1979. As a young woman Carol trained as a practical nurse, and everywhere the family moved she worked in a local hospital helping to take care of others, including many years on the staff of the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
Carol had a long-standing passion for genealogy, such that she was quick to capitalize on the emergence of specialized, internet-based tools that helped her to piece together the histories of the Johnson and Voeffray families, as well as the families of her relatives-by-marriage, through images, records, DNA ancestry and in some cases, through correspondence with distant relatives in Europe. She was an avid reader, especially of fiction, with a particular fondness for mysteries by authors such as Christie, Rendell and McCall Smith, and the like. In recent years she became a fan of the Golden State Warriors, following the games on television and at times wearing an oversized blue and gold GSW jersey. She was a loving mother and grandmother, who often sang and told stories, first to her children and then to her grandchildren as they grew up. She had a wonderful sense of humor, including an ability to find humor even in difficult times and situations. We remember her as loving and generous with her time, and as someone who frequently and selflessly put the needs of others before herself, both professionally and at home. She made all of us laugh and most importantly, she made all of us feel loved. She will be missed.
A graveside service for Carol will be held Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at 10:00 AM at San Carlos Cemetery, 792 Fremont St, Monterey, CA 93940.
