Rita Murphy Rome, 85, of Roeland Park, KS died on June 21, 2011 at her home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 25, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 5250 Mission Rd in Roeland Park, KS. Burial will be in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Lenexa, KS. Visitation will be Friday, June 24, from 6-8 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m., at McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Dr., Overland Park, KS 66204. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to St. Agnes Church, St. Agnes Grade School, or Bishop Miege High School.
Rita was born August 20, 1925 at her parent's home in Kansas City, KS. She was a graduate of Blessed Sacrament Grade School and Ward High School. She was a member of Ward's Band. She was married to Herbert Rome, November 17th, 1947 - for 60 1/2 years. She was a Cub Scout Leader for her sons and a Girl Scout Leader for her daughters. She was a member of the St. Agnes Altar Society. She was a volunteer organist at St Agnes Church and she was a volunteer Receptionist in the St. Agnes Rectory, both for 30 years.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents - Irene A and Michael T. Murphy; sisters - Monica I. Boyle and Marcella A. Caldwell; brother - Jack Murphy who was killed in World War II on D-Day, June 6, 1944 on Omaha Beach in France, and by her husband, Herb Rome. She is survived by 9 children - Ronald D. & Mary J. Rome, Judith M. Rome, Richard M. & Luci Rome, Loretta A. Rome, Kathleen T. & Curtis F. Clark, Barbara J & John T. Tremain, Drs. Michael P & Merit S. Rome, Thomas P & Theresa L. Rome, and Patrice L. and William E. Maloney; 23 Grandchildren - Kirk & Danica Rome, Mark & Julie Rome, Jennifer & Aaron Olsen, Lynn Rome, Brian Rome, Kyle Rome, Erik Rome, Tara Clark & Levi Bowman, Aaron Lewis, Kellie Clark, Adam & Kristina Lewis, Amie Rome, Jimmy Maloney, Austin Lewis, Patrick Clark, Jeff Rome, Emily Rome, Kaitlyn Maloney, Brendan Rome, Alisa Rome, Mikayla Tremain, Morgan Maloney, and Kacie Tremain. 5 Great Grandchildren - Madison Rome, Aiden Olsen, Molly Rome, Ellis Olsen, and Charlie Rome.
