Joan Katherine Hoch was born September 15th, 1928 in Great Bend, Kansas, to John and Emily (Kerby) Hoch. Her family moved to Emporia, Kansas, where Joan grew up. After graduating from Emporia High School in 1946, Joan attended Kansas State Teacher’s College, where she was an active member of the Tri-Sigma Sorority. While playing bridge with friends she met her husband Louis (Pat) Patterson. They were married 1949 and Joan graduated in 1950 with a degree in English. Joan traveled around Kansas following graduation before settling in Overland Park to raise her family, son John and daughter Dianne. She worked as a Bridal Consultant for the Jones Store Company until her retirement. Joan and Pat traveled the world together and across the country to countless football, basketball, and soccer games as well as numerous graduations, weddings and births. Seven grand-sons over seven years and even more great grandchildren kept her happy and busy. Spring and Summer nights on her back patio with neighbors John and Judy Drysdale were some of her favorite times.
She will be fondly remembered for her wit, charm, and most importantly, sense of humor. She enjoyed playing bridge with friends, gardening, and attending as many of her grand-children’s events as possible while being a devoted fan of the Jayhawks, Chiefs, and Royals.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, John Arthur (Shorty) Hoch & Emily Esther (Kerby) Hoch; her sister and brother-in-law; Marianne & John Notheis; her husband, Louis Patterson; her son; John Patterson; her daughter, Dianne Patterson-Burns; and her niece, Janet Volkmar.
