Joan Jones, age 74, of Lenexa, Kansas passed away on August 18, 2023 at home from ovarian cancer, a battle she fought valiantly. She was surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren and her great-grandchild. The Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, August 24th at Church of the Ascension, 9510 W. 127th Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66213. Visitation will be from 8:30 am – 10:00 am on Thursday, at the Church prior to the Mass. Burial in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Lenexa, Kansas. Joan was born on August 16, 1949 in Brooklyn, New York where she lived until 1954. Her family then drove across the country to California where they lived in North Hollywood. She graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1967. Joan worked in Banking as a teller, personal banker and branch manager from 1971 - 1993. Then from 1994 - 2011, she worked as a Customer Service Representative at Liberty Carton. Joan loved the interaction with people no matter where she worked.
In June of 1997, Joan met Doug Jones at Denim and Diamonds where he asked her to dance and from that moment on they shared 27 years of dancing, dining, travel to Italy and Jamaica and weekly outings every Wednesday and Saturday. Joan loved anything that involved socializing, one being Jazzercise. She was always ready to tell anyone that she met, she had done aerobics for 50 years! She never met a stranger and always had a positive outlook on life. Joan especially loved children and babies, so when Kelsey (and Kyle) had Charlotte (her first great grandchild), she was ecstatic. She would proudly say, "I am not just a grandma, I am a great grandma." She loved warm weather and always looked forward to her pool days. She had a passion for reading and dancing. She was a voracious reader and could devour a book in hours or days. Joan loved her Christmas traditions, which included Italian sausage, peppers and onions, homemade Italian spaghetti sauce, green Jell-O and Italian cookies. There are so many traits we will miss about her, one of which being her iconic cackling laugh and her silly antics. We miss her deeply and are finding peace in the fact she is no longer in pain.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Anna Petrucci.
Joan is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Doug Jones; daughter, Dina Happer and her husband, Simon Happer; son, Dave Mattox and his wife, Erin Mattox; grandchildren, Dylan, Kelsey, Meghan, Hanna, Luke, Dominic and David; and great granddaughter, Charlotte.
