David Saville Fick peacefully passed on Saturday, August 11, 2018 in the arms of his beloved wife, Deborah Ogg Fick, and is now with His Lord and Savior in Heaven for eternity. He was known as a kind and generous man who never had a bad word to say about anyone.
David was born in Des Moines, Iowa on May 31, 1939 to Rudolph Martin and Thelma Saville Fick. The family moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1941, where his father owned and operated Rudy Fick Ford. David started school at Blue Springs Elementary, attended Pembroke Country Day School through 8th grade and graduated from the Southern Arizona School for Boys in Tucson in 1957. He lettered in football and track at SAS, and was active in student government.
David went east for college attending the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, graduating in 1961 with honors. At Penn, David was on the rowing team, was an active member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and a cadet in the Reserve Officers Training Corps. Upon graduation, David served two years as a Lieutenant in the U. S. Army Transportation Corps, stationed for two years in South Korea. Upon completing his tour of duty in 1963, David returned to Overland Park, Kansas where he followed in his father’s footsteps, eventually becoming the finance manager and part-owner of Shawnee Mission Ford. David retired from the automobile business in 1988.
David fell in love and married Debbie Ogg in 1983. Continuing to reside in Overland Park, Kansas, David and Debbie loved to travel. During a trip to Eastern Africa in 2000, David and Debbie saw an opportunity for improvement in the entrepreneurial environment in Africa. This became his passion, and David researched, wrote and published three books – Entrepreneurship in Africa – A Study of Success, Africa: Continent of Economic Opportunity and African Entrepreneurs in the 21st Century, Their Stories of Success. All three books were meant to encourage a dialogue so that knowledge and ideas might be exchanged with the goal of improving Africa and the world.
David and Debbie have been members of Atonement Lutheran Church in Overland Park for 35+ years. David was also very active with the Shawnee Mission Optimist Club. David and Debbie were avid snow skiers with the Kansas City Ski Club; and David, a charter member of Brookridge Country Club, loved to play golf.
David is survived by his wife, Debbie; his daughter, Katherine Fick of Alma, Kentucky; his brother, Dan Fick and his wife, Cynthia of Frankfort, Kentucky; his sister-in-law, Julie Fick, wife, of his departed brother, Rudolph Martin Fick Jr. of Port Saint Lucie, Florida.
