Richard Lawrence Bellaire

It is with great sadness that we learn of Richard's sudden passing on August 23. Richard was a generous and kind man, with a passion for learning and books. Born in Windsor, Ontario, Richard attended University of Windsor then York University in Toronto, then headed to Fredericton to teach political science at University of New Brunswick. His belief in the power of collective advocacy led him to take a researcher position with the Canadian Association of University Teachers and then with the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada in Ottawa, from which he retired. He was respected by colleagues for his analytical skills, keen wit and contribution to social life.

Retirement gave Richard the opportunity to spend more time with family and pursue his love of books. He joined the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library as a volunteer where he helped to organize other volunteers and make the local bookstore, By the Book, a huge source of funds for the library. Richard was a steadfast and reliable Friend, and respected for his enthusiasm for making the bookstore a success. As one of his volunteer friends put it: Richard was patient, funny and devoted to the bookstore He will be sadly missed by all who knew him there.

A devoted Catholic, Richard believed in the strength of family. He was close to his Windsor family:

sisters Bernadette (late Al Deroia) and Anne Marie (late Rollie Robert), nieces Kris (Luke Bogdanovic) and Chantal (Dave Folkerson), nephews Mark Deroia (Wendy) and Randy Deroia, and grand nieces and nephews Kaylen, Josh, Seth, Aleksia, Danica, Jordan and Brendan. He spoke with pride of the accomplishments of his family.

He will also be sadly missed by his Ottawa “family” - Ken Hart and Minda Bojin, and their children Margaret, Alexandra and Zoe. “Uncle Richard” was a always a part of our lives – attending holidays, birthdays and many happy celebrations. He will be especially missed by his god daughter, Margaret whose life was enriched with his constant presence and belief in the power of acceptance, hope and love.

Richard's was a life well lived, filled with intellectual curiosity and deep caring. We love you Richard and thank you for your presence in our lives.

A celebration of Richard's life will take place at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 174 Wilbrod Street, Ottawa on Friday October 18th 2024 at 10 am until noon.

Friends and family are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations to Friends of the Ottawa Public Library are welcomed.
