Suddenly but peacefully, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, as a result of a stroke, in his 87th year. Predeceased by his beloved wife Joyce (2012) and cherished son Bruce (1995). Loving father of Cynthia (Al Armstrong) and David (Mary) and doting grandfather of Damian, Matthew, Jacob, Christian and Clayton. Love of God, family and country and helping others guided his life. Peter served in the Canadian Forces from 1947 to 1985 and with National Defence from 1985 to 1995. He was a proud Korean War Veteran and member of the Royal Canadian Regiment serving in London, Ontario; Rivers, Manitoba; Soest, Germany; NORAD North Bay and Ottawa. During his career, he received the Korea Medal, UN Service Medal, UN Medal (Palestine), UN Disengagement Observer Force Medal (Golan Heights), International Commission of Control and Supervision Service Medal (Vietnam), CF Decoration and Clasps and Parachute Badge. He also volunteered at Stride repairing aids for the disabled for 20 years. Peter was also a member of the 1946-47 Bridgetown High School Hockey Team which, against all odds, won the Nova Scotia Provincial Hockey Championship. The team was inducted into the Bridgetown Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Thanks to the caregivers and staff at the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre (Ottawa 2 East) for their compassionate and attentive care for the past two years. Visitation is at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road (at Albion Road), on Friday, October 14th from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with the funeral service on Saturday, October 15th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Perley and Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
